Take the waters and enjoy a soothing soak in the geothermal waters of the iconic Warm Springs Pools. Recently voted the No. 1 hot springs in the country in the USA Today 10 Best poll, these 19th-century bathhouses have served as a welcome respite for travelers for centuries. In 1761, an octagonal stone basin was built around the springs, making it the first spa structure in the country. Today, those stones are the foundation of the Gentlemen’s Bathhouse. Unaffected by the changes of the seasons, the waters remain at a natural body temperature all year and flow at the astounding rate of 1.7 million gallons per day.

Fed by four natural warm springs, these mineral-rich waters offer numerous health benefits. Of the 15 minerals found in the springs, the most prominent is calcium, followed by sulfur, magnesium, iron, silicon, potassium, and sodium, along with smaller concentrations of boron, lithium, chloride, manganese, and zinc. As a result, a soak in the waters promotes relaxation, soothes skin problems, boosts blood circulation, burns calories, and relieves pain. According to the National Institute for Health, electrolytes are essential for basic life functions, particularly related to the nerves and muscles, and calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium are among the most crucial electrolytes.

The bathhouses reopened in 2022 following a 14-month, $4.6 million rehabilitation. The goal of the project was to preserve as much historic building fabric as possible while ensuring that the buildings are prepared to serve many years of future use. The work has been celebrated with numerous awards for historic preservation, including Preservation Virginia, AIA Richmond and Traditional Building magazine.
