SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Evolution Hospitality is planning a $30 million overhaul of The Sheraton Gunter Hotel.

As reported by the San Antonio Business Journal, the word “Sheraton” will be removed from the property’s name as part of the renovation. It is believed the hotel will join Marriott’s Tribute portfolio, a line of boutique hotels with Texas properties in Austin and Galveston. The project is expected to begin early next year and be completed by November 2024.

Evolution Hospitality is planning to upgrade all of the 300-plus guest rooms, the lobby, the common area, and the exterior. The property’s fitness center will double in size, and a TopGolf simulator will be installed next to the onsite restaurant, Bar 414.

The company’s vice president of operations Ryan McCarthy told the Business Journal, says while the guest rooms are the main focus of the renovation, they want the project to be a “full transformation.”

The Sheraton Gunter Hotel has a strong musical connection, as legendary blues musician Robert Johnson recorded an album at the hotel, which was built in 1909. Rock legend John Mellencamp also recorded there in 2010. According to the article, the developer is considering installing a recording studio.
