SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The oldest hotel along the famed San Antonio River Walk could be set for a massive renovation.
As reported by SanAntonioReport.org, the new owners of El Tropicano Hotel, which opened in 1962, are seeking approval for upgrades to both the interior and exterior of the building.
According to the article, renovations first began on the hotel’s public space and 300+ guestrooms after it was acquired by Alamo Equity and Phoenix Hospitality Group in 2018. However, work stopped in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the hotel has been closed since.
After some legal wrangling, the hotel was recently acquired by new owners, although the article states they have not been confirmed and a closing date had not been set.
The El Tropicano Hotel is located near the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts and the Thompson San Antonio Riverwalk, which opened in 2021.
It is reported that despite the earlier plans for a major renovation, the nine-storey hotel is in “major disrepair.” The new project is reportedly similar to the previously approved plans, with a few changes, such as an improvement to the hotel’s pool deck and the removal of a planned retail component.
