Thornburg, Va. – Ground has broken on the massive Kalahari Resort in Thornburg, Va., which is almost two decades in the making.
The opening ceremony late last month attracted many people to a grassy field with an abandoned brick house and farm where the resort will stand.
Kalahari Resorts, which has as a property in Round Rock, Texas, as well as ones in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Wisconsin, first announced plans in 2007 to build a resort beside the Fredericksburg Expo Center. However, as reported by Fredericksburg.com, the 2008 recession put those plans to a halt.
According to the article, the resort will include a 900-room hotel, a 156,278-square-foot convention center, a 10-acre outdoor water park, a 267,429-square-foot indoor water park, and 1.38 million square feet of commercial space. The estimated cost of construction will be around $885 million, and the resort is expected to open in 2026.
