Just steps from Gulfport’s beaches and casinos, Hotel Vela is ushering in a new era of boutique accommodations on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. The 16-room hotel, housed in one of the city’s most historic buildings, blends modern luxury with a nod to Gulfport’s past as a port city and cultural hub with jazz-era roots. The original building was built as a mortuary in the 1920s, then turned into a menswear store. It sat empty for many years until it was transformed into Hotel Vela, a sultry boutique hotel, while keeping the original brick walls and charming vintage architecture. W Austin has unveiled a multimillion-dollar transformation, now offering the city’s largest suite—Penthouse I.
