COLUMBIA, S.C. – A proposed development to bring the first four-star hotel to Columbia, S.C., is undergoing more changes.

In January, local developer Ben Arnold brought forward a proposal called Visa Depot Hotel and Apartments. The project, to be near the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, would include a 301-room hotel, along with a 380-space underground parking garage and an apartment complex. Arnold had previously proposed three luxury hotels near the convention center, but the plan fell through after disagreements with local officials on the estimated cost of the parking garage.

As reported by local newspaper, The Post & Courier, Arnold is now proposing a $135 million hotel and apartment complex.

The proposed hotel would be a dual-branded Hyatt House and Hyatt Centric hotel in Columbia’s downtown Vista district. It is reported the hotel would feature 10,000 square feet in a rooftop restaurant, bar, and meeting space.

According to the article, Arnold hopes to break ground in early 2024, with construction expected to last around two to two-and-a-half years.
