Describe your current position.
I oversee all events for the organization, even if I do not directly plan them.
How did you get started in the meetings and events industry, and how did your experience lead to your current position?
I became interested in meetings and events after volunteering to lead my local church’s Christmas dinner. It was more work than I anticipated, but it sparked an interest I wanted to explore in depth. It opened the door to a gift I never thought I had, and I have pushed forward to develop it ever since.
What skills do you think are essential for planning successful meetings and events?
As a planner, you need to be organized. Some other skills I think you need to possess are creativity, problem-solving, flexibility, and a love for people.
What is your philosophy or approach to challenges and unexpected issues?
There is always a solution. When you are a problem-solver, you do not see things as problems. You see situations as challenges you can solve.
How do you keep up with industry trends, changes, and cutting-edge developments?
I attend events. I believe you have to always stay in the posture of a student. I am intentional about attending events for planners every year to learn and build relationships.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy meeting new people. I am constantly building new relationships and learning from those I have met while serving at events. I also enjoy experiencing different parts of the country and the world. There are many unique places, and it is so much fun to experience them with my clients.
How would you describe your most significant professional success?
I would have to say the project I completed for American Express stands out. It was one of my first projects back after having my daughter. I did not apply directly but was recommended by someone. What makes it such a success to me is my reputation as an event planner affords others to recommend me when opportunities come along.
What is the best professional advice you ever received?
I have received so much great advice, including using LinkedIn to grow my business. LinkedIn has allowed me to reach my target audience quickly and easily.
What advice would you offer others in the industry?
Build relationships with suppliers and colleagues. We are in a people business. When you build relationships, they become partnerships, allowing you to share business opportunities and establish resources.
