DALLAS, Texas – Ground has broken on a $3.7 billion renovation project of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas.

As reported by local television station NBC 5, all the details of the project are still in the works, but the 65-year-old building will be expanded extensively and take over a great deal of the space around it, currently filled with empty lots and garages. The venue’s technology will also be updated.

In the article, Craig Davis, CEO of Visit Dallas, called the project a “true game changer” for the city’s downtown, as he explains the area around the convention center is “kind of walled off.”

Additionally, Davis says the extra square footage will allow the convention center to “potentially double its business” and welcome more significant events, the article states.

According to a report from CoStar.com, almost 50 events have been booked for the new convention center through 2029, with organizers of around 100 more showing interest.

The flow of the convention center will be realigned from east to west from north to south, which will free up 21 acres for the city to lease to developers for several uses, including hotels, the CoStar article states.

According to the article, the expansion of the building will be completed in 2028 or 2029.
