Charleston

As the state capital, Charleston stands out for many reasons, says Leslie Smithson, communications director for Charleston
CVB. “For one thing, our shiny, gold capitol dome— yes, it is real gold! Our location is a winner,” Smithson says. “We are where two rivers and three interstate highways meet and within a day’s drive of two-thirds of the U.S. population.”

Visitors will find an abundance of recreation opportunities, Smithson says. “Finding a path, a trail, or a stream is super easy. When you are here, there is a good chance something is going on.” FestivALL, the Sternwheel Regatta, USA Cycling championships, and Live on the Levee, with free Friday night concerts all summer, are just a few of the festivals and signature events bringing people together, Smithson adds.

Charleston’s distinctive neighborhoods include downtown, with local shops, dining, and signature events. East End is home to the State Capitol Complex, Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences, and GoMart Ballpark, home to the Charleston Dirty Birds, an affiliate of Major League Baseball’s Seattle Mariners. Charleston’s Elk City offers eclectic shopping and restaurants; South Hills is a historic and hip neighborhood; and Kanawha City is home to specialty retailers, local eateries, and the University of Charleston.

The largest event hotel is Charleston Marriott, with 358 guest rooms and 17,406 square feet of meeting space. Embassy Suites has 253 guest rooms and 13,090 square feet of event space, and Four Points Charleston by Sheraton has 152 guest rooms and 9,043 square feet of function space.

Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center has 150,000 square feet of event space with 25 meeting and conference spaces, 50,000 square feet of exhibit space, a 25,000-square-foot ballroom, a 13,000-seat arena, and a 738-seat performing arts venue. There are more than 1,600 guest rooms within walking distance of the center with 3,500 guest rooms citywide.

A unique venue is J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works, a family-run operation in its seventh generation of producing small-batch salt. The facility is available for events, ranging from a casual dinner on the grounds to a reception event for 200 guests, as well as meetings and corporate retreats.
