Charlotte is known for many things, and that is part of what makes “The Queen City” so special, according to Mike Butts, executive director of Visit Charlotte and vice president of sales for Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority. “When guests are here, they find much to explore, like our distinctive neighborhoods, incredible arts and cultural scene, and an airport—the seventh-busiest airport worldwide—just seven miles from Center City.”

Uptown is the hub of Charlotte and home to the 600,000-square-foot Charlotte Convention Center. The venue features a versatile 280,000-square-foot exhibit hall, 55 meeting spaces, and two ballrooms, the largest of which can accommodate up to 5,200 guests for receptions. The 86,500-square-foot NASCAR Hall of Fame, which connects to the convention center, offers additional event space for signature events. NASCAR Hall of Fame’s “Great Hall” features racing memorabilia and showcases the car of a NASCAR Hall of Fame driver.

For more event options, Bojangles Entertainment Complex includes the 10,829-person-capacity Bojangles Coliseum, 2,447-person-capacity Ovens Auditorium, and a 4,400-square-foot event space seating up to 420 people theater style. The newly restored historic Carolina Theatre in Uptown serves as a civic and entertainment venue, seating 906 people for private events.

The 700-room Westin Charlotte connects to the convention center and has 44,042 square feet of event space across 27 rooms; it recently unveiled a $24 million renovation, which includes the second iteration of Dogwood Southern Table & Bar. The 305-room Sheraton Charlotte Hotel, less than one mile from the convention center,
has 68,195 square feet of event space across 29 meeting rooms; its largest contiguous space is 16,116 square feet. JW Marriott Charlotte has 22,240 square feet of event space across 14 meeting rooms, with a capacity of 680 people. A new 208-room Moxy Hotel will open this year across from the Spectrum Centre, home of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets; the indoor arena is three blocks from the convention center. The new 13-story Moxy Hotel will offer 2,500 square feet of meeting space.

Charlotte’s Sullenberger Aviation Museum has reopened, featuring iconic aircraft and historical treasures. The museum is named for now-retired pilot Chesley Burnett “Sully” Sullenberger III, who piloted the emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River in New York City on Jan. 15, 2009, and includes the actual “Miracle on the Hudson” airplane. The museum is available for special events, from seminars for 30 people to receptions for 700.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) recently completed the second phase of its Concourse A expansion. The project added new gates and a 14,000-square-foot Delta Sky Club.
