Destinations International has announced the organization’s 2021 Hall of Fame inductees and the Destination Organization Leadership Award recipient.

The 2021 Destinations International Destination Organization Leadership Award recipient is Elliott L. Ferguson, president and CEO of Destination DC. According to his honoree profile, “As the tourism industry grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, Ferguson is focused on strategic recovery with many organizations including DDC’s Recovery Advisory Committee, Connected DMV and the Downtown  Recovery Work Group.

“He also serves on the board of directors of the following organizations: Advisory Board of the Smithsonian National Zoo; DC Jazz Festival; Ryan Kerrigan “Blitz for the Better” Foundation and the United Way of the National Capital Area. He represents DDC as part of the Hospitality Alliance of Washington, D.C.”

The Destination Organization Leadership Award was created in 2017 and is among the association’s top honors, recognizing individuals who, through their exceptional work and achievements, have made a significant contribution to the destination marketing and management industry and a difference in the communities they serve.

The 2021 Destinations International Hall of Fame inductees include two event professionals from the South: Wayne Chappell and the late Marion Frances Szurek. Chappell is the former executive director of the Baltimore Convention & Visitors Bureau, former president of the Kansas City Convention & Visitors Bureau, and former COO and vice president of trade show relations of Greater Houston Convention & Visitors Bureau. Szurek was the executive director of the San Angelo Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“The Hall of Fame, started in 2014 during Destinations International’s 100th anniversary, was created to recognize individuals who have impacted the future of destination marketing and management for the better, made significant contributions to the advancement of the industry and shaped travel marketing and management,” according to a press release from the organization.

“These leaders have made tremendous contributions to our industry and their respective destinations,” said Don Welsh, president and CEO of Destinations International. “These visionaries have been responsible for the evolution of our industry and have had a profound impact on its healthy future.”
