AUSTIN, Tex. – The opening of the first Proper Hotel property outside of California will add nearly 10,000 square feet of meeting space to the nation’s live music mecca.
The towering 32-story building at 600 W. Second St. will feature 224 hotel rooms on the lower levels, while the top 20 stories are being reserved for residences and larger penthouses.
Interior designer Kelly Wearstler directed the design for the Proper, using local raw materials and unique original art. All things “Austin” inspired the look, including neon sign-inspired light fixtures, vintage carpets, photographs by Austin-based Barry Stone and elmwood, a material indigenous to Central Texas.
“Austin’s a city full of people who share our appreciation for the idea of a life well-lived and it’s a natural fit for the first Proper hotel located outside California,” Brian De Lowe, president and co-founder of Proper Hospitality and The Kor Group, said in a release. “This city is booming, vibrant, creative and just plain cool. It’s one of our favorite places to spend time.”
The Peacock, the Proper hotel’s flagship restaurant, will focus on family-style Eastern Mediterranean fare. Two more restaurants, The Mockingbird Cafe and La Piscina, are slated to open soon.
