WASHINGTON, D.C.—Destination DC has promoted Shirley Del Carpio to director of sales. Del Carpio joined Destination DC in 2021 as a senior national account director.
In her new position, Del Carpio will lead the convention sales team, develop strategies to position Washington as a top global meetings destination, and work closely with Events DC, hotels, and other industry partners. She will also help advance departmental priorities tied to the “There’s Only One DC” meetings brand and support long-term convention growth across sectors, including technology, corporate, pharmaceutical, and policy-focused industries.
“Shirley has played a pivotal role in elevating Washington, DC’s presence in the meetings industry,” says Elliott L. Ferguson, president and CEO of Destination DC. “Throughout her time at DDC, she has not only delivered exceptional results but has also grown as a leader whose influence is felt across departments. Her ability to mentor colleagues, strengthen cross-team collaboration, and shape initiatives that enhance convention center productivity demonstrates the depth of her impact. Shirley’s leadership, relationships, and passion for this city will drive even greater results as she steps into this new role.”
Melissa A. Riley, senior vice president of convention sales and services, adds, “Shirley is a respected leader with a deep understanding of our clients and our community,” Riley says. “She leads with purpose and authenticity, and she inspires teams to perform at their best. Her natural ability to build meaningful relationships—both within our organization and across the broader industry—strengthens every partnership we cultivate. I am excited to see her guide our sales division into its next chapter of growth.”
Del Carpio has more than 20 years of experience in hospitality and convention sales, including leadership roles at Hyatt, Hilton, and Marriott. She has been recognized as both a Hyatt Elite Performer in the top 10 percent worldwide and a Hyatt Super Elite Performer in the top 1 percent worldwide.
Del Carpio said the director of sales role is personally significant. “I built my career in this region and proudly call Washington, D.C., home, so representing this city is an honor,” she says. “Every meeting here has the potential to foster important conversations and drive impact. Leading the team that brings our destination to life for clients is a responsibility I value. This opportunity allows me to give back to the city that has shaped my professional journey and contribute to its continued growth and success.”
