Hurricane Harvey Emergency Centers And How You Can Help

As floodwaters continue to rise in Houston, a large rescue operation is underway as many in Texas are in need of assistance. Looking for a way to help, many individuals and organizations have stepped in to manage shelters, distribute food and water and more.

In Houston, Mayor Turner has opened the George R. Brown Convention Center as an emergency shelter. The Mayor is encouraging the public to come to the Convention Center if they can make it safely. Parking in Tundra, Avenida South and Avenida North garages is free.

Mayor Turner says the Toyota Center will be used as an additional shelter to help with an overflow of people at the convention center, but residents seeking shelter will need to go through the George R. Brown Convention Center first.

The George R. Brown Convention Center is in need of the following items:

Baby formula
Hand sanitizer
Non-perishable food
Bottled water
Comfort kits — (soap, shampoo, toothpaste)

To locate residents in shelter at the Convention Center, call Red Cross at 832-523-0425 or visit

The Red Cross has also launched a relief response to Hurricane Harvey and is in need of financial donations to be able to provide immediate disaster relief. You can help by visiting, calling 1- 800-RED CROSS or texting the word HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Donations enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from this disaster.

The city of Dallas has prepared The Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center as a mega shelter to house Hurricane Harvey evacuees seeking safety from the deluge of rain and rising floodwaters along the Texas Gulf Coast. The city opened the facility Tuesday morning ready to accommodate 5,000 people.
