Meetings Industry Celebrates First Ever Global Meetings Industry Day

On April 14, 2016, meetings professionals, convention and visitors bureaus, conference centers, and other professionals in the industry hosted events and rallied across the globe to celebrate the first ever Global Meetings Industry Day (GMID), a day created to bring together and highlight the impact of the meetings industry. The Meetings Mean Business Coalition, with the help of the Convention Industry Council and other partners, expanded the North American Meetings Industry Day (NAMID) to further recognize the importance of the meetings industry.

From Florida to Virginia and South Carolina to Tennessee, the South saw the importance of this celebration and joined in on the festivities Thursday night. In fact, meetNKY/Northern Kentucky Convention & Visitors Bureau’s Vice President, Julie Kirkpatrick stated that “Global Meetings Industry Day recognizes the tremendous economic impact generated by meetings and conventions and celebrates the work of millions of planners and hospitality industry professionals who make meetings happen every day” (Northern Kentucky Tribune).

However, this day was not just celebrated with events, rallies, and presentations. Professionals in the industry expanded this celebration to include social media as well. By using the hashtag #GMID, meetings professionals were able to share updates on the events, pictures, and more. Ultimately, the day was a success and a way for the industry to make history.
