San Antonio, Tex.—The San Antonio International Airport (SAT) broke ground on a new terminal, scheduled to finish completion in 2028. In addition to the new space, the airport will feature improved facilities to accommodate the region’s growth.
The Terminal Development Program, as the expansion project is called, comes from a need to accommodate current and future air service expansion, relieve increasing congestion, and enable tourism business in the area.
New terminal amenities will include up to 17 domestic and international gates, more than 850,000 square feet of new terminal space, including 41,000 square feet of new concession space, and more than 29,000 square feet of club lounge space. The design vision for the new facility includes natural colors, textures, and peaceful spaces, as well as vibrant and colorful spaces reflective of San Antonio’s culture and landscape.
According to the airport’s website, more than 10 million passengers—an average of 25,000 per day—fly in and out of San Antonio International Airport each year. By about 2040, that number is estimated to reach approximately 18 million passengers per year.
The Terminal Development Program will guide future development of the airfield, terminal facilities, ground access, and supporting infrastructure over the next 20 years to support future air service expansion in nonstop destinations, frequencies, and up-gauging.
