SAVANNAH, Ga. – A new Hilton hotel is in the plans at the Savanah Convention Center.
As reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Savannah-Georgia Convention Center Authority (SGCCA) board recently approved the construction of the new hotel, which is expected to cost more than $200 million and have nearly 400 rooms. No timeline has been established for groundbreaking and construction.
The SGCCA will own the hotel, but the board selected Songy Highroads to serve as its representative and Texas-based Matthews Southwest to develop the property.
Pat Farrell, an SGCCA board member, says the need for the hotel has been evident for more than a decade.
The convention center is currently undergoing a massive expansion to double the size of its exhibit halls and add a 40,000-square-foot ballroom, 15 meeting rooms, and a 900-space parking garage. The article states the expansion is scheduled to wrap up in January 2024.
SGCCA chairman Mark Smith told The Journal-Constitution that the board concluded, considering the current situation in the world’s credit markets, it made sense to build the hotel themselves.
It’s good news and bad. Good for the city for the city of Savannah and bad news for the hotel owners who has invested their hard earned money to compete directly with them. Good luck
