Starkville thrives on its “town and gown” connection between the local community and Mississippi State University (MSU). The combination gives planners a rare blend of large-scale amenities and small-city warmth.
“Starkville is not a conference suburb; it is a real community that invests in the visitor experience year-round,” says Paige Hunt, director of tourism for Visit Starkville. According to Hunt, the university is a driving force behind the entire Starkville experience—from the city’s hospitality infrastructure to its culinary scene, which features more restaurants per capita than any other community in the state.
The Mill at MSU is the area’s premier conference center, occupying a beautifully restored 1902 cotton mill. The structure features original brickwork, century-old timber beams, and more than 10,000 square feet of event space across multiple rooms. Its largest space is the grand ballroom, which accommodates up to 1,000 guests for receptions. The Mill is directly integrated with the 104-room Courtyard by Marriott Starkville MSU at The Mill Conference Center. The 105-room Hilton Garden Inn Starkville features 5,518 square feet of event space across six rooms and can host 210 attendees seated theater style in its largest space. In addition, the 122-room Hotel Madelon, a Marriott Tribute Portfolio property is slated to open in summer 2027. The boutique hotel will be located just off the MSU campus and will include a full-service restaurant, a rooftop bar, and other amenities.
Between sessions, attendees can enjoy local staples, such as rooftop views at The Landing or the world-famous cheeses from the MSU MAFES Creamery. Groups can explore MSU’s 4,200-acre campus, which is also home to the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library. Other nearby attractions include the Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, Civil War sites, antebellum architecture, and Mississippi Blues Trail markers.
