Exploring A Grand and Glamorous Meeting Hotel

A February visit to the city of Coral Gables, Fla., aka “The City Beautiful,” lived up to its favorable reviews. Driving down the wide streets, some with palm trees filling the center boulevards, I was impressed by attractive architecture of the castle-like buildings, most in soft pastel colors that painted a pretty picture against a blue south Florida sky. Like many buildings in this city, the Hotel Colonnade, where I was fortunate to spend the night, has a façade and some interior spaces that date back to the 1920s. The exterior has ornate trim, large columns and open-air veranda restaurants around 3 sides of the building. Upon entering, a large, atrium leads to an elegant stairway. Marble walls and floor shined from the lights of glamorous chandeliers. Talk about a sense of arrival.

The five-story hotel has 157 guest rooms, including the amazing Presidential Suite, where I was fortunate to stay. Several lobby areas have several places to gather and there’s a wonderful living room with large-screen televisions, foozball, air hockey, pool table and other games. The hotel sparkles after a $21 million renovation in 2016 that created an elegant but modern look and feel.

Ian McClendon, general manager at the Hotel Colonnade said the 23,000 square feet of meeting space is largely used by corporate groups and for social events. Stand-out spaces include the marble-tiled Rotunda and the beautiful pool deck which overlooks the city.
