Savannah Convention Center Expansion to Break Ground in 2020

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Ground should be broken for the expansion of the Savannah Convention Center by summer 2020, authorities say.

Plans call for doubling the exhibit hall to 200,000 square feet and creating a new entrance. A 40,000-square-foot ballroom, outdoor space and 15 more meeting rooms (for a total of 28) will also be added. A new convention center hotel is also in the works.

The first phase of the Plant Riverside District is expected to be unveiled in early 2020. The $280-million, 4.5-acre development will feature 17,000 square feet of event space, a waterfront park, dining options and a monument honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

Anchoring the development will be the 419-room JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District, currently scheduled to open in February 2020 with 28,898 square feet of meeting space, multiple dining options, a rooftop pool, a spa and a fitness center.
